Summer in the Square 2012

Cllr Cooper and Ben Thomas get things started

If you were one of the thousands who turned up to enjoy 2012's Summer in the Square event - sponsored by John D Wood & Co. - you won't need telling what a great day out it was. On one of her last official engagements before her term of office came to an end, Wandsworth's mayor Councillor Jane Cooper - with the able assistance of Friends' chairman Ben Thomas - opened proceedings at 11am from the live sound stage in the Square. (You can find out what's happening in the left-hand corner of the picture at the foot of the page)

It was a day of sunshine and clouds, but all our finger crossing and touching wood succeeded, and after a wet and chilly week, the rain stayed away. There was something for everybody, food and drink in the Food Court in Cotswold Mews, the chance to find out about the work of local charities and organisations, and to buy the produce and wares of dozens of local traders whose stalls reached down the High Street from the Square.

The giant PlayZone was a great magnet for children, with go-karting proving a particular attraction, along with the giant slide, bouncy castles, a very popular pets corner, face painting, story telling, and a painting competition. The Dog Show too was a great hit as in previous years. There are lots of pictures of the day in our photogallery .

And all day in the Square there was non-stop entertainment from local singers, choirs, bands and dancers - together with some memorable performances from the Gentleman of St Johns.

Waiting to present the flowersEvery picture tells a story..

Lily and Anna Harding wait nervously to present the Mayor with a bouquet, under the watchful (and nervous!) gaze of Elliot Matthews, Head of Technical Services at Thomas’s School.

Many thanks to local resident Hallam Murray for the lovely photograph
